  • African American History Month is observed during the month of February. It was created by Carter G. Woodson in the 1920s. In 1976, the month-long celebration was established as a time to reflect on the history, teachings, and achievements of African Americans.   • Fulton County Board of Education Approves Name of South Fulton STEM School

    At its February 20 meeting, the Fulton County Board of Education approved the name Global Impact Academy for the new South Fulton STEM School located in Fairburn, GA. The name Global Impact Academy, presented to the board for consideration at its January 14 work session, was nominated by a committee of South Fulton stakeholders including School Governance Council members and elected officials. The name reflects the 吉林11选5开奖结果 district's desire to provide a rigorous environment where students attain the knowledge and skills to positively impact the world.

    Background

    The Global Impact Academy is positioned to be a world-class 吉林11选5开奖结果 that provides students the opportunity to study high-tech, high-demand courses that are college and career focused. Hallmarks of the 吉林11选5开奖结果 include an integrated curriculum with a focus on STEM education and an emphasis on design thinking. Design thinking is a problem-solving process that combines creative and analytical approaches that require the integration of knowledge and skills across multiple disciplines. Students will be supported through robust advisory programs that ensure every student has a guidance counselor, faculty advisor, and corporate mentor.

    Partnerships with Georgia Tech's Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC), will enhance the curriculum. There will be extensive opportunities to engage with corporate, community, and higher education partners through projects, presentations, and internships.

    Construction funded by SPLOST, the Global Impact Academy is one of two STEM-focused 吉林11选5开奖结果s set to open in August 2021. The North Fulton Campus, Innovation Academy, is in Alpharetta.

  • Ridgeview Charter Middle is hosting their second AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Showcase Tuesday, February 25 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Ridgeview is inviting educators and visitors from around the metro area and state to observe their model AVID program and how it's implemented.  Attendees will also learn about student achievement outcomes, best practices, accountability for college readiness, classroom visits, observation of critical reading strategies, hear from a student panel, and more. AVID instructors and administrators will illustrate how to align AVID to their current efforts and next steps for implementation.

 

  • The candidate declaration phase for the 吉林11选5开奖结果 School Governance Council (SGC) elections process ends February 26.
    Each FCS principal has received information on eligibility guidelines. Voting takes place March 17-24. If needed, run-offs will take place March 26. Winners will be announced March 27. School Governance Council enable parents, staff, students, and community leaders to work together on 吉林11选5开奖结果 strategic plans.

 

  • Oakley Elementary will host a Black History Quiz Bowl February 28 at 8 a.m. Students in grades 3-5 will put their Black History knowledge to the test as they compete against each other via an online platform. The hour-long event will enhance the students' academic competition skills and help them develop a deeper knowledge of African American history.

 

  • In an effort to continue the conversation on the importance of early learning for children up to 5-years-old, FCS' Office of Early Childhood Programs will offer a series of community events that will feature the documentary, "No Small Matter," previewed , followed by a panel discussion. The film explores early childhood education through poignant stories and humor, laying out the evidence for the importance of the first five years of learning. After each viewing, the subsequent panel discussion will provide information on local resources that support young children and families.   • Woodland Elementary teacher Rita Hudson was recognized recently by Learning.Com as a Digital Literacy Educator for outstanding use of digital Literacy Resources in the classroom. She is acknowledged as the top user of Learning.com's Keyboarding Curriculum in Fulton County Schools, qualifying Woodland as a Top Performing Digital Literacy School. Learning.Com tracks the usage by how many curriculum items are launched. Ms. Hudson had over 19,000 curriculum launches just in her class and her 吉林11选5开奖结果 has the highest usage in the district.

    Ms. Hudson uses Learning.com as an independent center in her computer lab. It is also an option for students who finish lessons early.  That means she had the highest curriculum usage out of the 59 elementary 吉林11选5开奖结果s. According to Learning.com, students at Woodland have 95% typing accuracy. A "proficient" rating among elementary 吉林11选5开奖结果 students is 90%. Keyboarding skills are essential for students to improve performance on online assessments, ensure academic preparedness, and enhance career readiness.

  • "The Lost Boys" exhibit returns to Camp Creek Middle. The exhibit is on display to combat social issues surrounding African American and Latino boys.

  • College吉林11选5开奖结果 Park Elementary engaged fifth grade students with a program called "Reading with A Rapper" (RWAR). The program is an innovative academic approach to literacy that included a pop-up demonstration for 100 fifth graders at the 吉林11选5开奖结果.  RWAR used innovative technology to strengthen the literacy skills of the students.

    "Seeing our College吉林11选5开奖结果 Park fifth graders engaged in an ELA figurative language lesson without being able to hear a pin drop in the room was amazing," said Principal, Dr. Maisha Otway. "Every child was engaged and empowered to be successful in a culturally relevant experience."

    RWAR has already toured Houston, Texas, and New Orleans visiting several 吉林11选5开奖结果s with pop-ups and installations. College吉林11选5开奖结果 Park Elementary is the first campus visited in Georgia.

 

  • Roswell High (RHS) TAG/Social Studies teacher Nancy Moeller created an innovative, custom-designed, hands-on course on Roswell history and takes students on multiple field trips throughout the semester. Students learn facts about their city and are provided with local accounts from residents and history experts. Guest speakers have included: Juliette Johnson, past President of the Roswell Historical Society; Michael Hitt, former Roswell police officer and historian with extensive research findings on the city's founders; Adam Corder, lifelong Roswell resident and genealogical researcher; Ray Manus, former RHS teacher who was employed at the 吉林11选5开奖结果 when it first integrated and more.

    The class has visited historic sites, some dating back to the 1830's. The house where President Theodore Roosevelt was married, the mill that served as the site where the city was founded, Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall, Founders' Cemetery, Roswell Historic Society Archives, and the African American cemetery hidden in plain sight. The City of Roswell has been accommodating in allowing free entry to the students and several historic organizations have provided special tours.

    Ms. Moeller obtained a commercial driver's license to be able to transport the students on an activity bus to the local sites twice per week. The course begins with individual presentations about how they came to live in Roswell, what they like about it, and what they would do to improve the city. The class culminates with projects including an illustrated children's book set in Roswell or about Roswell history and a video guide to the city.

 

  • Riverwood International Charter's IB Environmental Science class conducted a bus emissions experiment to address the question: "What can Fulton County Schools do to improve the air quality at Riverwood?" The students, under the guidance of their teacher Patti Lawrimore studied the emissions from a diesel 吉林11选5开奖结果 bus using sensors to measure particulates, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ozone, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, and compared results to the emissions from a propane-powered 吉林11选5开奖结果 bus. In addition, the students are researching the impact of traffic flow and idling in the bus lane on air quality. Ms. Lawrimore concluded," The kids did an amazing job offering solutions such as changing over the fuel source for the buses, offering free game tickets to kids who ride bikes, green/living roof space, no idle zones, moving the fields, and outdoor areas away from the highway."

  • Leadership South Fulton Education Day highlighted programs and 吉林11选5开奖结果s in Fulton County Schools (FCS). Last Friday, Superintendent Mike Looney and Langston Hughes High 12th Grader Skye Jackson, led a Fireside Chat and lunch at the South Learning Center. The lunch was provided by the College吉林11选5开奖结果 & Career Academy Culinary Program led by Chef Kimberly Rutherford. Participants also toured the College吉林11选5开奖结果 & Career Academy Pathways and Banneker's Safe Center.

    At the end of the day, Linda Bryant, FCS Board Vice President; Montreal Bell, Early Learning; Yalanda Bell, CTAE; and Dr. Anthony Newbold, Principal of Global Impact Academy were part of a panel that discussed how community and business involvement can support students outcomes.

    Leadership South Fulton is a program that develops and expands leadership skills and potential in individuals representing the South Fulton community. Through a series of learning experiences, class participants gain insights in business, community, government, and quality of life.

  • Flu Season reminder - Georgia is currently experiencing widespread flu cases as reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Georgia Department of Public Health.  According to the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a flu vaccine offers the best defense against getting flu and spreading it to others. The AAP states that the flu can cause 10 days of fever and lead to serious complications even for healthy kids.
